Amended vs. Replacement Birth Records

After legally changing your name, many individuals also wish to update their birth certificate so that it reflects their gender identity.

In Minnesota, there are two types of birth record changes:

Amended Birth Record

An amended birth record includes a notation indicating that the document was amended by court order on a specific date.

Replacement Birth Record

A replacement birth record does not include any notation indicating a change. It appears as a newly issued record without reference to an amendment.
